Taking your helper on a family vacation sounds like the best of both worlds: you get a break while someone helps with the kids, and your helper gets to see a new country. But the logistics — visas, accommodation, costs — can be surprisingly complicated depending on your helper's nationality and your destination.

This guide covers what's easy, what's hard, and how to make it work.

Visa Requirements by Nationality and Destination

Southeast Asia (Easiest)

Most Southeast Asian countries offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry for FDW nationalities:

Destination Myanmar Filipino Indonesian
Malaysia ✅ Visa-free (14 days) ✅ Visa-free (30 days) ✅ Visa-free (30 days)
Thailand ✅ Visa-free (14 days) ✅ Visa-free (30 days) ✅ Visa-free (30 days)
Vietnam ✅ Visa-free (14 days) ✅ Visa-free (21 days) ✅ Visa-free (30 days)
Indonesia ✅ Visa-on-arrival ✅ Visa-free — (home country)

Southeast Asia is the easiest option. Many Singapore families choose destinations like Bali, Phuket, Da Nang, or Langkawi specifically because helper visas are not an issue.

Korea and Japan (Difficult)

Destination Myanmar Filipino Indonesian
South Korea (mainland) ❌ Visa required (very difficult) ⚠️ Visa required (possible) ❌ Visa required (very difficult)
Jeju Island ❌ Not visa-free for Myanmar ⚠️ Visa-free for Filipino only ❌ Not visa-free
Japan ❌ Visa required ⚠️ Visa required ❌ Visa required

Korean visa applications for helpers require extensive documentation: an appeal letter to the embassy explaining why you're bringing a domestic worker, proof of employment, proof of your travel plans, and evidence that the helper will return to Singapore. Even with all documents, approval is not guaranteed.

The Korean immigration authorities are cautious about domestic workers from developing countries due to historical overstay and illegal employment issues.

Europe, US, Australia (Very Difficult)

Generally requires a visitor visa with extensive documentation. Success rates are low for FDW passport holders. Only attempt if you have a specific, compelling reason (e.g., extended family event).

Accommodation Options

Option 1: Separate room (Ideal but expensive)

Book an extra hotel room for your helper. She gets her own space; you get privacy.

Cost: Can double your accommodation budget. More practical in Southeast Asia where rooms are cheaper (S$30-60/night for a basic room near your resort).

Option 2: Suite or apartment with separate sleeping area

Book a family suite, serviced apartment, or Airbnb with a living room that has a sofa bed. Your helper sleeps in the common area.

This is the most popular option among Singapore families:

  • You maintain some privacy (separate bedroom)
  • She has a designated sleeping space
  • Cost increase is moderate (20-40% more than a standard room)

Option 3: Same room with extra bed

The budget option. Some families add a rollaway bed or mattress to the hotel room. Workable if you're comfortable sharing space.

For longer trips, this can get tiring for everyone. Best reserved for short weekend getaways.

What NOT to do

Don't book a separate cheap hotel far from yours and expect your helper to commute by Grab. This creates safety risks, logistical headaches, and defeats the purpose of bringing her along.

Practical Tips

Before the trip

  • Check visa requirements at least 2 months before travel
  • Ensure your helper's passport has at least 6 months validity
  • Pack appropriate clothing for the destination (your helper may not own winter clothes if going somewhere cold)
  • Discuss expectations: working hours during the trip, off days, meals

During the trip

  • Your helper is still working, but the environment is different. Be clear about what you need: "You're here to help with the kids during the day. Evenings after 8 PM are your free time."
  • Include her in family meals — she's traveling with you, not following behind
  • Give her some free time to explore, especially if this is her first time in the country
  • Carry a copy of her Work Permit and passport (she should carry originals)

Costs to budget for

Item Estimate
Flight (regional) S$150–400
Accommodation (extra bed or room) S$30–100/night
Meals S$15–30/day
Transport (share with family) Minimal
Visa fees (if applicable) S$30–100

Should You Bring Your Helper?

It depends on your family situation:

Bring her if:

  • You have young children (under 5) who need constant supervision
  • The trip is longer than 5 days
  • You want to actually relax, not just change the location of your parenting
  • The destination is helper-visa-friendly (Southeast Asia) Leave her home if:
  • Your children are older and self-sufficient
  • The trip is short (weekend getaway)
  • The destination has complicated visa requirements
  • You want genuine family-only time
